Knowing Your Worth (Even When It Stings)

Jul 28, 2025

Last week, I had one of those consulting moments that every service provider knows too well.

A prospective client responded to a proposal I’d followed up on. Her message was kind, but clear:

“The hourly rate was a bit outside my budget, so I’ve started working with a Canadian HR consultant I found online.”

Oof.

I’d offered a flexible, strategic consulting arrangement. We’d had a good conversation. And suddenly, it was off the table.

For a few seconds, I felt that old whisper of doubt.
Should I have offered less? Maybe a discount? Was I too expensive?

But I caught myself. Took a breath. And reminded myself:

I’m not here to be the most affordable option.
I’m here to deliver strategic, relationship-driven HR support for organizations who are ready for clarity, alignment, and meaningful culture change.

My clients aren’t just looking for a transaction — they want a thinking partner. Someone who doesn’t just check a box, but sees around corners with them. They get in-person strategy sessions, meaningful conversations, and the kind of nuanced support that only comes from deep, real-time connection. It’s high-touch, high-trust, and designed to meet them where they’re at.

And the truth is: I’ve worked with enough values-aligned leaders to know when the fit feels right. It’s not just about budget — it’s about timing, readiness, and alignment.

Would I love to work with more clients like her? Absolutely.
But I also know that the ones who are ready will see the value — and won’t ask me to shrink myself to fit a line item.

It reminded me of a post I shared recently on LinkedIn — about staying rooted in your value even when the response stings a little.

If you’re a freelancer, consultant, or small business owner navigating these same pricing conversations, just know: you’re not alone. Saying no to misaligned work is how you create space for the right work to show up.

You don’t need to be for everyone. You just need to be right for the right ones.
