Letting Go Without Guilt: Why Business Owners Must Prioritize Growth Over Loyalty
Apr 21, 2025

Recently, I was speaking with a business owner who shared something that really stuck with me. He had been struggling to part ways with his independent contractor bookkeeper.
Another year had passed, and they were still supporting his business — he still hadn’t made a move. Why? Because he felt guilty.
Even though he knew he needed more — more support, more proactivity, more freedom to focus on what he does best — guilt kept him stuck. He cared about this person. He appreciated their past contributions. And the thought of letting them go filled him with shame.
Hearing this, I told him immediately:
"If you ever feel that way about me, fire me."
Not because I don't believe in the value I bring.
Not because I feel insecure about my work.
But because this isn't about me.
It's about ensuring that every person you work with is truly a value-add to your business — not a value-take.
Business owners shouldn’t carry feelings of guilt or shame about making necessary changes. They shouldn’t have to wonder if they're being disloyal or unkind when they make the decisions their business needs.
If someone no longer fits the next phase of your journey, it's okay to move on.
In fact, it's necessary.
Good partners — whether employees, contractors, or vendors — want you to succeed.
They want you to feel supported, empowered, and confident that you have the right people around you.
It’s never about proving someone's worth.
It’s about aligning what your business needs with the support you’re receiving — and letting go when it’s no longer a match, with respect, professionalism, and kindness.
If you're reading this and struggling with a similar situation, here's a reminder:
