When Business Owners Become the Bottleneck: Letting Go to Grow
Jul 14, 2025

“I feel like I’m spinning a hundred plates... and they’re all about to fall.”
That’s how one of my clients described his day-to-day recently. He’s running a growing business, wearing every hat: HR, hiring, admin, operations, contracts, client work. And like many entrepreneurs, he’s smart, capable, and deeply invested.
But he’s also one step away from burnout. And more importantly, his business growth is slowing—because he’s become the bottleneck.
The Myth of “I Can Do It All (So I Should)”
To make matters more interesting, he added, “Honestly, ChatGPT makes everything easier. I feel like I could just do everything myself and get rid of the team.”
I get it. Tech can be empowering. Tools like ChatGPT can streamline a lot, including HR tasks, process building, content writing, and more.
But just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should. That’s where the real trap is.
Your role as an owner isn’t to do it all. It’s to steer the ship. To focus on the vision, lead your team, and do the work that actually lights you up.
Here’s What Happens When Owners Don’t Let Go:
Tasks pile up. Decisions stall.
Team members get frustrated waiting for direction.
Opportunities are missed because you’re stuck updating a contract or chasing a receipt.
You end up exhausted—and still behind.
The truth is: Holding onto everything isn’t control. It’s chaos in disguise.
Letting Go Is a Strategy, Not a Weakness
The hardest mindset shift for many founders is realizing that delegation isn’t giving up, it’s levelling up.
When you start to hand off the right things to the right people or systems:
You move faster.
Your team gets stronger.
And you finally have room to think, plan, and actually enjoy running your business again.
This doesn’t mean hiring a full-time team of specialists overnight. It can look like:
Bringing in a Fractional HR partner (hi 👋) to manage people, policy, and process.
Documenting workflows so things don’t live only in your head.
Using tools like ChatGPT to assist, not replace your team.
Identifying what you actually want to keep doing… and delegating the rest.
What I Tell My Clients
I often say: Just because you can do everything, doesn’t mean you should. Focus on what energizes you—and build from there.
Start small. Hand off one thing. Then another. And then another. You’ll be amazed how much lighter things feel when you’re not holding it all up yourself.
Ready to get out of the weeds and focus on what you do best?
Let’s talk! I help business owners get clear, delegate confidently, and grow without burning out.
🌊 One Last Thought...
I want all my business owners to find a sense of peace… not just in their business, but in their life. The kind of peace that lets you actually disconnect.
If a long, silent beach walk is on your bucket list... you deserve to take it. (It’s on mine, too.)
Letting go doesn’t mean losing control. It means choosing clarity, intention, and a version of success that doesn’t require burnout as a badge of honour.
